If it were not one thing it was another, Caroline thought. After many months of separation from Stelios, they were finally reunited and settling into life together when the news came of the attempt on her parents' lives. She had been unable to see her parents or even her sister for more than a moment because, Melek Taus had told her, 'security concerns'.

Had it not been for Stelios' presence, she most likely would have snapped under the pressure. The Seelie, in their ingratiating style pretended to fawn over her and sympathise with her family's losses. Of course, no good Unsleelie was fooled by the disingenuousness of Seelie machinations. She was, after all, her mother's (and her father's) daughter. Her gentle nature was sorely tried when it threatened those whom she loved. Her father would have been the first to attest to that, if, she mused, she could have seen them before this moment.

After the funeral ceremonies, Caroline and Stelios followed Lizette through the hidden corridors of the palais. In the room she could see familiar and trusted faces concealed far from prying eyes. Upon seeing her mother seated regally as ever upon a simple chair.

Swallowing back tears, Caroline dropped Stelios hand and rushed forward to kneel at her mother's feet. She embraced her mother and swallwed back sobs of relief at seeing her again, "Maman!"Caroline cried.

Her mother stroked Caroline's curls, and moved a stray one out of her daughter's eyes, "You came," the Fae Queen smiled. "Would that it could have been under different circumstances."

Noticing her father standing nearby, Caroline, lifted her gaze to her father. "Papa!"

The rift between the Comte de Rochefort and his daughter that had been seeded so many years ago now seemed to be forgotten. There were much more important things to consider now.
